Going bananas

On the perimeter of the villa property we found a long row of banana plants growing. Talk about going bananas for banana plants.

Oh, you do know Bananas are not trees, right? Know why? They have no bark. They are just really tall perennials.

Not too many folks know that there are many varieties of banana, some sweet, some bland, some for raw eating and some which should only be consumed after cooking and all of them have a taste all their own. Those living in northern climes don't get to have but one kind of banana, Cavendish. Yes, they are good, but it's a pity we don't get to taste the others. Ah well, perhaps in another life we'll all get to go bananas for a while.

The leaves of the banana plant are often used in cooking. No, they are not eaten, but food is wrapped within the leaves and then either baked, boiled or steamed. Funny, huh? The many uses of plants still boggle the mind. Now if I could only have my own banana plant in my house...
