Glory's Garden

All the world's a garden, you know, and we are mere flowers within it. Come, I'll show you!

Don't get any funny ideas!

A Day at Tarpon Springs

We spent our first day in Florida at Tarpon Springs. It's one of our favorite places in Florida and I'll tell you why.
Justin can gets boots with his name on them...of course, he's content to just get his picture taken with the sign, because as he says, "Got boots in Pennsylvania...flip flops for Florida." Good enough reason for me!

Merry Christmas from Sarasota, Florida

Merry Christmas from Sarasota, Florida! Tom and I spent a lovely Christmas Eve at the Marie Selby Botanical Garden and I thought I'd share some Christmas-y photos... even though it is actually past Christmas time.

Fun at Epcot

Remember I told you we had the chance to visit Epcot while we were in Orlando? Well, we did have us a bit of fun there and I thought I'd let you know about it.

Christmas At the Harry P. Leu House

Merry Christmas! I thought I'd show you the Harry P. Leu house all  decorated in its holiday's best. Hope you like it.

I didn't count all the Christmas trees they had, but there seemed to be one in every room. WOW!

All I want for Christmas is...

All I want for Christmas is....how do you think I'll finish that sentence? Here's a clue: You can find it at Epcot.

Can never have enough flowers

You know I can never have enough flowers and so...here are more for you on this cold winter day...at least it's cold up north.

Who doesn't love pansies and petunias?

This powder puff tree seems to bloom perpetually.

Back Home from Trade Show

I've been away for a while, but I'm back home now. I went down to Orlando to help Tom at a trade show--supposedly the BIGGEST of all trade shows and it sure as heck seemed to be! I got lost several times. This was the Power-Gen show which caters to all things power generation, power plants and such, plus a whole section of green-friendly products too. Believe you me, everything went right over my head. No, not cuz I shrunk! I just have very little idea what all that stuff meant. What stuff?

Well, Tom brought a heat exchanger--whatever that is-- two helium mas-spectrometers---aka helium leak detectors- a sniffer probe, plus helium in a tank and fancy-schmacy plugs for demonstration purposes. I kind of know what that stuff is for--Tom has shown me a hundred times-- but that's pretty much where understanding ended for me.

Tom expected to get loads of work from power plants seeking to increase their productivity and efficiency. I saw no evidence that there was anyone interested in that, but what do I know?

Thankfully, the trade show only lasted three days, four if you count the few hours it took to set up the booth and take it back down at the end. I would very much like it if I never went to another one of these shows again. Only bright spot was the pretty outfits Tommy made me buy for the show. I looked kinda cute in them, although you'll never know. Tom never took a picture of me! Or maybe they're still on his phone? I'll have to check.

Anyway....

That's not saying we didn't have some fun while down in warmer climes. The Sunday before the trade show we went to EPCOT at Disney world with Tom's business buddy, Marc Laz.

Tommy and Marc

Marc's a nice enough guy, but geeze-Louise...I have such a bone to pick with him.
Marc, you silly boy! That's just not ANY rabbit and skunk.
We introduced him the these pretty little topiaries of famous Disney characters and you know what? He didn't know who Thumper and Flower were! Can you imagine?

Needless to say, we had some serious educating to do while at Epcot...and I suppose I had some serious learning to do myself, but the trade show is over and done and I'm back home...at least for a while. More on that tomorrow.

The Glory Scale Foiled!

I have awful news for any of you who were crazy stupid silly industrious enough of start using the Glory Scale. Through no fault of my own--at least I don't think I'm to blame, but perhaps I am!-- The Glory Scale has been foiled!
The last time I was bigger than all my kids

What? You don't know anything about the Glory Scale? Well, then, no harm done. For you others who were not so lucky, I do apologize profusely.

I did a bad thing

I did a bad thing. Wanna hear about it? Sure you do.
Not so massive and not that ugly pump
I went with Tommy to Virginia last Sunday. He had a few stops, dropping off a massive, ugly looking pump and picking up a leak detector. Plus there was the possibility of buying more equipment from a going-to-be-out-of-business-soon place.
Perfectly good Leak detector
No, that wasn't the bad thing I did. It was good to spend some time with Tommy even though it was mostly in the car for a very long ride to and from Virginia-- 600 miles is long to me, how about you? The weather wasn't nearly as good as Tom had hoped so he considered the trip a bit of a bust and he felt bad taking me when it wasn't that great out.

Nearly Wordless Wednesday: Christmas Blossoms

It should be no surprise to you that I've been going through a flower withdrawal of sorts. A trip to Longwood Botanical Garden to see Christmas blossoms was a good cure.

Alligators in Orlando

Forget about alligators in the sewers. You should worry about the real alligators in Orlando.

This is the lake on the shores of which stands the much ballyhooed Harry P. Leu Botanical Gardens, and don't you know, there be alligators in there!

Crochet Project: Gift bags

So, winter is here and with that gardening goes out the window--at least for me in my cold, Pocono home. Now I get to stay inside and crochet. What my latest project has been is gift bags. Perfect time for them with Christmas coming soon.

Why would I make crocheted gift bags for gift-giving when there's perfectly useful wrapping paper, gift boxes and even paper gift shopping bags which are so easy to use? You have to know, I'm all for saving trees and wrapping paper is a total waste of perfectly good trees, in my opinion, even if you do re-use it, although I'm betting most of you never do.

Strange Bird

Brandon tells me about a strange bird in the front tree field yesterday and his only description was, "It had a green head and was funny looking."

Well, that could be anything....as long as it was wearing a green cap, I suppose. I suspected what it was and told him so. I also hoped the strange bird would come back so I could photograph him. If it was the same bird I was thinking of, he had been around before and would likely return.

Visit to Harry P. Leu Botanical Gardens

The day we were supposed to leave Orlando to start back home, Tom finished up work just minutes before 3pm. He came back to get me at the hotel and bustled me out of there saying, "We're getting some fun in. To hell with everything!"

And so we went for a visit  to the lovely Harry P. Leu Botanical Gardens where we've been many times before.

A present for mom

On the way down to Florida, Tommy stopped in Columbia, South Carolina to visit his mom and bring her a present....two actually.

Off to work with Tommy

So, Tommy had the brilliant idea to take me along with him to work. Okay, so it wasn't so brilliant.

Justin's Good Bowling Day

I thought I'd tell you about Justin's good bowling day. In general, every bowling day is a good bowling day for him. This particular day was super duper good, though! His score for both games were over 100 and that's great for him!

Halloween Costumes Past

Halloween may be over, but that doesn't mean I can't show off some of the many costumes  from the past, those I made over the years for my kids.
Here Alexis has an owl costume--you can't tell by the picture but her arms had wings and she took off her owl mask, but use your imagination, why don't you.

Also you'll see Justin in the Bunny costume I made for Alexis when she was just over a year old. Each of the kids got to use it so I really liked that it never went to waste...think I even passed it on to some other kid, although I don't recall who it was.

Tri-colored Pin Oak Tree

Recall if you will, my pin oak with the bi-colored leaves. Only one side of this tree turned a bright burgundy. Well, it took some time, but the rest of the green eventually turned too. Took long enough!

Improved Hanging Baskets

I've improved my hanging baskets ever so slightly--which oddly enough they are no longer hanging. They are, however, sitting around like any ordinary houseplant on the window sill. I suppose you're wondering why I'm bothering to fuss with my hanging baskets now...going into winter.

Pretty Coleus

Really? You have to ask? I thought you knew me by now.

Ghost in the Garage?

Not an apparition, just ghostly lights
Okay, I wasn't going to say anything about this--I mean to say, it doesn't have anything whatsoever to do with gardening-- but it's just too weird to ignore. I do believe I'm being haunted.... by a ghost and not just any ordinary ghost!

No, I'm not kidding.

Now, before I say any more, if any of you have been reading my epic novel-in-progress Violet's in Bloom, you'll know I have a couple of ghostly characters in prominent roles. Of course, that's fiction. But what happens when fiction suddenly becomes not-so-fiction?

Green Thumb on Overdrive

So, it's come to my attention that I have a super-charged green thumb--or perhaps it's just on overdrive. Whichever it is, it's something awesome to see. I'll show you what I mean.

You may not believe it--I know I barely do and I saw it happen!-- but this tiny little spig of a geranium--a fake one-- just up and started blooming almost the instant I stuck it into soil. Literally not more than a week later it spouted flowers. Talk about green thumb, huh? And that's not all!

Rescuing Death Row Annuals

I will assume you recall my pilfering rescuing of a bunch of death row annuals.
Purple and white double petunia

I will also assume you know of my plan to use them in my hanging baskets. Well, even if you didn't know nothing about any of that, you've been caught up in this short but concise summoning-up*.

Full of Potential

So, there I was clearing the rest of my garden stuff off the porch and I find this pot full of potential.

Okay, it's just soil, but as any gardener will tell you, soil equals potential! DUH!

Odd Color Change Pattern

Have I shown you my Butternut Squash Harvest? I didn't think so. Well, here it is.

Caught in the Act

Recall if you will, just the other day when I came home with some ill-gotten goods--a grocery bag full of pilfered plant cuttings, to be exact.

So, Tom sees my ill-gotten goods on the kitchen counter and says, "You just took these? Didn't anyone stop you?"

Photo Contest!

Yes, a Photo contest! No, it's not my photo contest, but I thought I'd tell you about it, just the same.
Cute, but will my wheel barrow fit in there?

It's over at Uncle Mac's Garden Shed where you can never tell what odd-ball character will show up to teach you something about veggies, gardening, dinosaurs and even WWII war ships. What? You haven't been there yet? What are you waiting for?

Don't Judge Me!

Oh, go ahead...judge me all you want. Who am I to tell you not to? Why would I ask you not to judge me? Well....I've been naughty again.

Seeds of Autumn

As you may know, I've been collecting the seeds of autumn.

T'is a fun time for me, even if I do know the winter winds are just around the corner...or rather coming up the ridge behind the pole-barn before battering into my garden.

What a change!

As you can see, the sky was blue as can be here one day last week, but little did we know that would change and what a change!

Guess what I've been doing

Come on. You can guess what I've been doing. Here's a hint.

Nothing? Well, I'll tell you then. I've been looking for seeds... ripe and ready-to-pick ones and I found plenty and this time in my own garden. There's a surprise!

More Last Flowers of the Season

More of the last flowers of the season...if you can stand it.

The roses--bless their tender petals-- are blooming away, as if the cooler temperatures didn't bother them at all. I'll hate to see them go.

Never Happened Before

This may come as a surprise, but we have never--as long as we've been living in the Poconos, some 24 years-- been able to get through September without a killer frost. Really! It's never happened before.

Beach Baby

You might think to call me a beach baby since I spent almost two weeks near several beaches, but the isn't to say I wasn't thinking of my garden back home while my toes were in the sand.

Exploring Ruins in Paradise

The one groovy thing about the trip we took to Somana, Dominican Republic was the islands connected with a walking bridge at the resort. Where it leads is to hidden ruins in a jungle paradise, and when you see ruins...well, we just had to explore.
