Justin at Penn State

If you've been around here long enough, you'll know Justin has been participating in Special Olympics and he recently--like last Thursday-- went to Penn State for the state finals. This was a big thing for Justin who had never been away from home on a sleep over without family members. He was thrilled!
Justin ready for the Free-style relay

The first day they only had preliminaries. On the second day, just as Tom and I arrived, the first event for Justin was a free-style relay with three other team members-Janice, Nicole and Nathan-- and they got the gold. YAY! Great way to start a day.

Showing off the gold

The other team members--there are ten all together, but unfortunately one boy, Micheal, couldn't come. He was sick in the hospital, the poor kid-- had their races and some prelims mixed in just to keep things hopping. Justin had a few more races but nothing that counted. Still exciting to see and he had fun. That's all that mattered.

After the long day of swimming was done, there was dinner and then fun at the carnival type party. Music, dancing and frolicking abound and what did Justin do for most of it? Sit by the fence and veg out. Loud music isn't for Justin, but he had popcorn and was happy just to sit with the coaches and Mom and dad and watch others have fun.

The next day, it all started again bright and early. After breakfast it was swim, swim, swim, but still Justin smiled. And why wouldn't he be smiling? He got the bronze in his next event, the 25m Free-style.

He got fourth place ribbon for the 50m backstroke and...

another fourth place ribbon for 50m free-style. Yep, mom and dad were plenty proud of their guppy. Justin's already looking forward to next year. He has his eye on longer events such as the 100m free style and 100m backstroke. We'll be practicing until next June and then you'll see Justin coming back to Penn State.

  3. Congrats to Justin. Sounds like kind of a big step for him, being away on an over-nighter.
